Witherspoon Improvement – Building Closed 8/8 & 8/9

The Witherspoon Improvement Project continues and the west side of the building has already undergone visible transformation. Removal of the brick stage, outdoor seating, and bike racks make way for the upgrades that will take place over the next few months. Event reservations within the building remain unaffected by the construction, and Harris field reservations are being considered on an individual basis.

This week, the project will move forward with the demolition of the outdoor stairs. University Student Centers worked with the contractors to schedule this demolition on days that would have little impact on the use of the student center, working around orientation, move-in weekend, and scheduled events.  In an effort to ensure the safety of our guests, Witherspoon will be closed to the public on Thursday, August 8th, and Friday, August 9th.  Beginning Wednesday, August 7th, Pedestrian walkways will be rerouted along Cates Avenue from Dan Allen Drive to Witherspoon. All pedestrians are asked to use the crosswalks and travel on the sidewalk in front of the Student Health Center.

If you have any questions regarding the Witherspoon Improvement Project or the temporary closure of the student center, please contact TJ Willis at tgwillis@ncsu.edu.

Witherspoon Student Center Improvement Project Set to Begin

Witherspoon Student Center will be undergoing a facelift over the coming months!

Witherspoon Student Center Conceptual Rendering

As seen in the above early conceptual rendering, enhancements to the building’s east entryways and outdoor stage area on Harris Field mean this student center will soon be an inviting venue for on-campus events, lounging, viewing films, and much more. Hot summer days and frigid winter nights will no longer be an issue in the Witherspoon lobby, as added vestibules to both entries will help with climate control and keeping the elements outdoors. By adding exterior lighting and electrical power, along with a larger stage, a better drainage system, and landscaping appeal, this renovation project creates an ideal location for an array of outdoor events.

Keep an eye out for Phase 1 of construction to begin the week of July 22nd.  As with most construction projects, things are subject to change. We are sharing the following information to provide you the most up-to-date information we have, but also knowing that it may change.

The map below shows the rough boundaries anticipated during this two phased, approximate 3 month construction project.

Witherspoon Construction Phase I

Contractors will have a construction entrance from Cates Avenue to Harris Field, so please use caution and be alert while in the area. During Phase 1, it is expected the north entrance near the Cinema will be closed as well as the 2nd floor balcony door, and about a third of Harris Field will be blocked off. Once Phase 1 is complete and the majority of the improvements are done, Phase 2 will reopen the improved north entrance and temporarily close the south entrance closest to the Washington Sankofa Room and Cates Avenue until construction is complete in Late October 2013.

Don’t worry, Witherspoon Student Center will remain fully functional for the duration of the renovation, and construction noise is expected to be minimal and non-evasive. Reserved spaces are available both indoors and out through the entirety of the project, but don’t miss your opportunity to hold your next grand event on the new and improved Harris Field at Witherspoon Student Center in the Spring!!!

NC State Alums Put Degrees, Hearts to Work on Talley Project

A guest post from Lisa Perkins, Vice President, Marketing and Communications for Rodgers Builders, Inc.

Steel Signing Event during 2012 Wolfpack Welcome Week. Left to Right: Thomas Daye (’93), B.D. Rodgers (’49), Wes Spurlock (’99), Jeremy McGinnis (’02)

Starting with Rodgers Chairman B.D. Rodgers, Wolfpack pride is rampant on the Talley construction site.

B.D. Rodgers, named the College of Engineering’s Distinguished Alumni in 2009, graduated in 1949 after serving in the European Theater during World War II. In 1963, with $5,000 borrowed from his life insurance policy, a truck and one superintendent, he founded Rodgers Builders, Inc., today one of North Carolina’s largest privately owned companies.

“I’m grateful to NC State for the highly regarded engineering program they offered when I attended, and still do today,” says Rodgers, noting that he often refers to his old textbooks for answers to construction questions.

He joins Jeremy McGinnis, PE (2002), and Wes Spurlock (1999), both of Rodgers; and Thomas Daye (1993) of DayeCo, in fondly calling this campus “home.” Joint Venture Rodgers Russell DayeCo serves as construction manager for the Talley project.

“Being back on campus every day brings back a lot of great memories,” says McGinnis, project manager. “NC State is a very special place for me and I’m proud to be a part of a project that will become a new landmark for our University.”

“It’s great to be back and reminisce about my time on campus as a student, but this project is also giving me a new perspective and appreciation of what it takes to make a successful semester or school year,” says Spurlock, superintendent. “It’s very interesting to see and be involved with the things that go on behind the scenes that allow the campus to function.”

Rodgers actively engages in building the capacity of the minority contracting community. Joint-venture partner DayeCo is one of a number of companies Rodgers is currently mentoring.

“Our approach to mentoring is designed not only to help build increased industry capacity,” says Pat Rodgers, Rodgers’ president and CEO. “Our program also seeks to develop an organization’s internal strengths, systems, and skills. The result is greater mission fulfillment, community impact, and organizational sustainability.”

“As an almost-20-year alum, it’s an honor to come back and do this project with NC State and Rodgers, because you get an opportunity to show the University the skills you learned here,” says Daye, president of DayeCo Construction. “With B.D. being an alum, and the other NC State alums here, this is like coming back home.”

For information about Rodgers Russell DayeCo, visit Rodgers Builders, Inc. , H.J. Russell & Co., and DayeCo Construction.
