Witherspoon Student Center Improvement Project Set to Begin

|

Witherspoon Student Center will be undergoing a facelift over the coming months!

Witherspoon Student Center Conceptual Rendering

As seen in the above early conceptual rendering, enhancements to the building’s east entryways and outdoor stage area on Harris Field mean this student center will soon be an inviting venue for on-campus events, lounging, viewing films, and much more. Hot summer days and frigid winter nights will no longer be an issue in the Witherspoon lobby, as added vestibules to both entries will help with climate control and keeping the elements outdoors. By adding exterior lighting and electrical power, along with a larger stage, a better drainage system, and landscaping appeal, this renovation project creates an ideal location for an array of outdoor events.

Keep an eye out for Phase 1 of construction to begin the week of July 22nd.  As with most construction projects, things are subject to change. We are sharing the following information to provide you the most up-to-date information we have, but also knowing that it may change.

The map below shows the rough boundaries anticipated during this two phased, approximate 3 month construction project.

Witherspoon Construction Phase I

Contractors will have a construction entrance from Cates Avenue to Harris Field, so please use caution and be alert while in the area. During Phase 1, it is expected the north entrance near the Cinema will be closed as well as the 2nd floor balcony door, and about a third of Harris Field will be blocked off. Once Phase 1 is complete and the majority of the improvements are done, Phase 2 will reopen the improved north entrance and temporarily close the south entrance closest to the Washington Sankofa Room and Cates Avenue until construction is complete in Late October 2013.

Don’t worry, Witherspoon Student Center will remain fully functional for the duration of the renovation, and construction noise is expected to be minimal and non-evasive. Reserved spaces are available both indoors and out through the entirety of the project, but don’t miss your opportunity to hold your next grand event on the new and improved Harris Field at Witherspoon Student Center in the Spring!!!
