Richard D. Berlin III has been named associate vice chancellor for NC State’s Campus Enterprises effective September 10.
In his new role, he will lead the university’s division for retail and hospitality, which includes dining, catering, bookstore, trademark licensing, student centers, golf course and ID card office. He will also serve as liaison to Live It Up! Hillsborough Street.
“Rich brings an entrepreneurial, yet university-focused, vision to Campus Enterprises,” said Scott Douglass, NC State’s vice chancellor for the Office of Finance and Administration. “His past experiences will make him a valuable partner in the evolving development of the university’s campus. Further, he brings an entrepreneurial perspective to hospitality programming that will be essential to the successful initial development of the NC State’s innovation district on Centennial Campus.”
Berlin will be a key leader and visionary on numerous campus wide initiatives to promote the chancellor’s vision of student success and organizational excellence. He will play critical roles in developing the student housing master plan study and future growth of Centennial Campus.
“Rich’s depth of background at three major institutions as well as the complexity of services he managed at the University of the South made him the ideal candidate for this position,” said Doug Morton, associate vice chancellor for NC State Facilities and search committee member. “We are enthusiastic about the ideas and leadership he can bring to NC State.”
Berlin most recently served as director of business services at the the University of the South, providing strategic, fiscal and operational leadership to the university’s auxiliary departments, which included dining, catering, bookstore, hotel, golf course, student post office, conference services and an airport. He also led the university’s purchasing department. A regular contributor to special projects, he supported initiatives to streamline travel reimbursements, P-Card reporting, surplus property procedures and led development of the school’s student merchant account program.
“Partnerships and collaboration are critical to our operation, and the relationship we have with Finance and Administration — Campus Enterprises in particular — is critical to our success,” added Dr. Barry Olson, associate vice chancellor for NC State’s Division of Academic and Student Affairs. “We welcome Rich’s energy and enthusiasm, and we are eager to begin engaging in even more robust collaboration.”
Berlin has also served at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cornell University and Duke University. He is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and holds a B.S. in finance from the University of Connecticut.
