On the Oval Culinary Creations Coming to Centennial Campus

New dining location opening late Summer 2013 designed to serve students, faculty, staff, campus partners and guests

February 25, 2013 (Raleigh, NC) – NC State Dining, a service of Campus Enterprises at NC State, will establish the first permanent, full-service dining establishment on Centennial Campus since its inception 25 years ago when it opens a new food court in August 2013.

On the Oval Culinary Creations — located in the new Wolf Ridge Housing Complex — will feature four micro restaurants,and a diner venue with early-morning and late-night access. The menu will include a wide variety of fresh-made entrees and sides, including comfort, low-fat, vegan and vegetarian options.
Conveniently located near the College of Engineering, the College of Textiles and new Hunt Library, On the Oval will provide a much-needed and long-awaited solution to robust foodservice on Centennial Campus.

More than 400 guests can enjoy the indoor and outdoor seating areas, making it a hotspot for students, faculty, staff, corporate partners and campus visitors to relax and eat.  The seating area has been designed to accommodate groups that want to collaborate over a meal.

On the Oval will offer the following choices of restaurants:

Cold Fusion will be the place to stop for fresh sandwiches and wraps made with fresh breads, choice meats and cheeses, specialty salads and soups.

Fahrenheit will serve artisan pizza baked in a fire-deck oven, plus an ever-changing menu of rotisserie meats and fish, each served with a complementary side item.

Flash Point will feature authentic regional Asian flavors, including fresh-rolled sushi, noodle bowls with stir-fried meats, vegetables and tofu, customized with your favorite sauces and
condiments.

Newton’s Grill and Diner will have a menu of your favorite diner foods, including items hot from the grill menu, breakfast favorites, and more. You can look for Angus beef burgers, hand-cut fries, and signature grill specials.  A separate, intimate seating area (Newton’s Diner) will have a separate entrance that will enable it to operate as its own venue for breakfast, late nights and weekends.

NC State Alums Put Degrees, Hearts to Work on Talley Project

Starting with Rodgers Chairman B.D. Rodgers, Wolfpack pride is rampant on the Talley construction site.

B.D. Rodgers, named the College of Engineering’s Distinguished Alumni in 2009, graduated in 1949 after serving in the European Theater during World War II. In 1963, with $5,000 borrowed from his life insurance policy, a truck and one superintendent, he founded Rodgers Builders, Inc., today one of North Carolina’s largest privately owned companies.

“I’m grateful to NC State for the highly regarded engineering program they offered when I attended, and still do today,” says Rodgers, noting that he often refers to his old textbooks for answers to construction questions.

He joins Jeremy McGinnis, PE (2002), and Wes Spurlock (1999), both of Rodgers; and Thomas Daye (1993) of DayeCo, in fondly calling this campus “home.” Joint Venture Rodgers Russell DayeCo serves as construction manager for the Talley project.

“Being back on campus every day brings back a lot of great memories,” says McGinnis, project manager. “NC State is a very special place for me and I’m proud to be a part of a project that will become a new landmark for our University.”

“It’s great to be back and reminisce about my time on campus as a student, but this project is also giving me a new perspective and appreciation of what it takes to make a successful semester or school year,” says Spurlock, superintendent. “It’s very interesting to see and be involved with the things that go on behind the scenes that allow the campus to function.”

Rodgers actively engages in building the capacity of the minority contracting community. Joint-venture partner DayeCo is one of a number of companies Rodgers is currently mentoring.

“Our approach to mentoring is designed not only to help build increased industry capacity,” says Pat Rodgers, Rodgers’ president and CEO. “Our program also seeks to develop an organization’s internal strengths, systems, and skills. The result is greater mission fulfillment, community impact, and organizational sustainability.”

“As an almost-20-year alum, it’s an honor to come back and do this project with NC State and Rodgers, because you get an opportunity to show the University the skills you learned here,” says Daye, president of DayeCo Construction. “With B.D. being an alum, and the other NC State alums here, this is like coming back home.”

North Carolina State University and U.S. Bank Combine Campus ID and Prepaid MasterCard, ATMs on Campus

RALEIGH, N.C.  and MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.  (April 18, 2012) – North Carolina State University (NC State)  and U.S. Bank have partnered to offer the Wolfpack One Card, a campus identification card that doubles as a prepaid MasterCard® card, to the incoming freshmen class in June 2012.  Current students, faculty or staff members can upgrade starting in Fall 2012. As part of the contract, U.S. Bank will also deploy ATMs on campus.

U.S. Bank is a leader in offering multiple banking services to students, faculty and staff on university campuses, including dual-purpose banking and ID cards, but this is the first time that the company has combined the ID with a prepaid card. The card can be used for purchases wherever debit MasterCard cards are accepted.

“This relationship provides a significant upgrade to our existing card program, giving our campus population a convenient card and banking program when combined with MasterCard’s worldwide acceptance,” said Dr. Dan Adams, associate vice chancellor for Campus Enterprises at NC State.

“Our partnership with NC State offers students and staff of this nationally-recognized university the convenience and security of having a single card that operates as their campus ID and a card they can use to pay for purchases,” said Kevin Morrison, senior vice president at U.S. Bank. “With U.S. Bank’s prepaid MasterCard functionality, approximately 34,000 students and 8,000 staff members now have the ability to receive a direct deposit from their employer, the financial aid office or their parents and to spend those funds on or off-campus. They also have the benefit of U.S. Bank’s online tools so they can easily stay informed and in control of their finances.”

The new Wolfpack One Card continues to provide on-campus functionality, including meal plans, the AllCampus debit account and door or parking gate access, to name a few.

The Wolfpack One Card is free for new students and $10 for current students, faculty or staff members who wish to get the new card. The card has no enrollment or monthly fees, and no minimum balance required to keep the account active. U.S. Bank offers email and text alerts to keep cardholders informed about account activity – such as ATM withdrawals, processed deposits or low balances – and access to a secure website (online or via their mobile phone) to view account balances, check transactions and make changes to the account anytime.

Parents, an employer, or the university financial aid office can deposit funds electronically, as can any other Wolfpack One Cardholder. (Students electing to receive funds from multiple sources are required to have a Deluxe account, which is free of charge.) Cardholders can withdraw money for free at merchants where debit MasterCard cards are accepted and at the 23,000 U.S. Bank or MoneyPass-branded ATMs.

NC State ID Card/Office Gets New Name

RALEIGH, NC (April 18, 2012) – The NC State AllCampus Card office — and its ID card — have been renamed Wolfpack One, it was announced today by Dr. Dan Adams, associate vice chancellor for Campus Enterprises.  The name change was precipitated by a new relationship with U.S. Bank that will enable two debit account programs to be accessible from the card, among other features, one being the AllCampus Network.

“We want to make the many benefits of the card to be as clear as possible,” said Adams. “Giving the card and office a unique name independent of our AllCampus debit account program will allow the two debit accounts – AllCampus and U.S. Bank Debit MasterCard – to reside under the Wolfpack One Card umbrella.  It also gives us an opportunity to create a name that is uniquely NC State.”

Rave! Events Recognized by Outstanding Online Catering Menu

RALEIGH, NC – NC State University was announced as a silver recipient for the 2017 Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards, given by The National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS). Named for a NACUFS founder, past president and highly regarded innovator, the awards celebrate exemplary menus, presentations, special event planning, and new dining concepts. They also provide an avenue for sharing ideas and creative presentations in campus dining services.

NC State Dining received a silver, second place award in the Large School division for a submission in the Catering – Online Menu category. Following a name change from University Catering to Rave! Events and a transition into operating in the newly renovated Talley Student Union, Rave! Events supports everything from student organization and departmental functions to high-profile receptions and galas. These online catering menus were designed to accommodate the clientele mix at each venue with sustainability, nutrition and affordability in mind.

More than 75 colleges and universities across North America submitted entries in six categories, including Residential Dining Concepts, Residential Dining—Special Event, Retail Sales—Single Concept, Retail Sales—Multiple Concepts/Marketplace, Catering—Special Event, and Catering—Online Menu. A team of six judges examined each entry carefully and selected top candidates in each category.

“The entries submitted by the various NACUFS institutions showcase some of the best trends and ideas in college and university dining service programs across the country,” said Dawn Hearne, Hendrix College, Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards chair.

Each year’s winning contest entries are displayed at the NACUFS national conference and award winners are publically recognized at a luncheon culminating with the announcement of the Grand Prize winners. Grand Prize winners also receive recognition with a feature article in NACUFS’ magazine, Campus Dining Today.

Competing for one of these prestigious awards not only helps market the dining program as an award-winning program, it builds a sense of pride and team spirit within a dining staff. Sharing creativity and knowledge with other foodservice professionals is a key component to NACUFS membership.

NC State Restaurants Participate in Triangle Restaurant Week

NC State’s Terrace Dining Room and State Club Restaurant will be participating in Triangle Restaurant Week June 5 -9, 2017. This week-long event is a celebration of culinary excellence designed to incorporate premier Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and surrounding area restaurants.

The Terrace Dining Room and State Club Restaurants will both feature $15 three-course weekday lunch menus for the event, not including tax and gratuity. NC State University Faculty and Staff enrolled in the IncrEDIBLE Savings Club program can use payroll deduction to receive an extra 10 percent off their meal.

Campus Enterprises Employees Awarded for Excellence in NC State Finance and Administration

On April 26, 2017, the Office of Finance and Administration recognized 25 employees for their meritorious accomplishments and contributions to the NC State community. These accomplishments include any notable contributions that are above and beyond an employee’s normal job description that showed demonstrated excellence in their departments or divisions, the NC State campus community, the State of North Carolina, or the lives of others.

Nominees from Campus Enterprises include Kenneth Dowdy, Brian Green, Lindsay Hester, Erica Sauls, Sara Smith and Alfreda Williams. Nominees Brian Green and Lindsay Hester were two of five Finance and Administration employees selected to represent the division at the university level.

Brian Green was recognized in the Efficiency and Innovation category for his efforts as the director of golf maintenance at Lonnie Poole Golf Course. Due to Green’s contributions, Lonnie Poole Golf Course was able to avoid catastrophic turf loss throughout extreme weather in the summer of 2016, saving thousands in repairs. Additionally, his efforts in sustainability have resulted in savings of over 3 million gallons of water annually as well as recognition by Audubon International as a Signature Golf Sanctuary. Lonnie Poole Golf Course is only the second university course in the world to receive this prestigious designation.

Lindsay Hester was recognized in the Spirit of North Carolina category for her tireless dedication to her operations and initiatives as NC State Dining’s marketing manager throughout her maternity leave and additionally her husband’s cancer diagnosis and treatment. Responsible for the marketing of over 35 dining locations on campus as well as nutrition and sustainability programs, Hester’s organization, advanced planning and efficient use of resources allowed her to maintain smooth execution of each program throughout her leave.

Green and Hester will represent the Finance and Administration Division at the NC State Awards for Excellence Ceremony on June 7.

Campus Enterprises to Host Student Hiring Fair

Campus Enterprises will be hosting a Hiring Event for student employment positions this Wednesday, April 5. Campus Enterprises employs more than 1200 NC State students, providing them with opportunities to learn valuable workplace skills, get connected to the campus community, and earn income to support their academic pursuits.  A job with Campus Enterprises is more than just a job; our student employment program is structured around defined learning objectives to ensure that students learn critical thinking skills, develop transferable skills, promote diversity, build awareness of campus resources and experience community.

Positions are now available in NC State Dining, Rave! Events, NC State Student Centers, and NC State Bookstores. Semi-finalists will be selected based on the following criteria:

How well the design/slogan reflects NC State University.
Whether the design/slogan is eye-catching, powerful and unique.
Whether the design/slogan is in keeping with the university’s code of conduct.

NC State Dining Unveils New Dining Plans for 2017-2018

NC State Dining is introducing new meal plans and features to our program for the 2017-2018 academic year. The changes are designed to provide more flexibility and value to our students.

“Our Freedom Pass plan has been our most popular meal plan, so we decided to build on its foundation to create options that have broad appeal depending on the level of coverage a student desires,” said Randy Lait, senior director for hospitality services. “We’ve also added new features that make them even more flexible, such as more meal credits, two lunchtime meal periods per day and guest meals. The new plans have been received positively by student leaders, so we feel confident our students will be very excited, too.”

Three new meal plans – called Anytime Plans – feature all day dining hall access, meal credits and guest passes that can be used in the dining halls and include 100 dining dollars:

Weekday Plan | all-day dining hall access and 8 meal credits to be used Monday – Friday each week, plus 100 Dining Dollars and 3 guest meals per semester

Everyday Plan | all-day dining hall access and 12 meal credits each week, plus 100 Dining Dollars and 5 guest meals per semester

Deluxe Plan | all-day dining hall access and 15 meal credits each week, plus 100 Dining Dollars and 8 guest meals per semester

For students who desire fewer meals, NC State Dining will offer one meals-per semester plan:

Block Plan | 150 meals per semester, includes $100 Dining Dollars

Commuters and students living in on-campus apartments or Fraternity/Sorority Housing will still be able to purchase the Commuter/Apartment plan:

Commuter/Apartment Plan | $750 Dining Dollars per semester; 5% discount at the register.

Lait added, “Students will now have the option of an early lunch or late lunch meal period. Instead of only being able to swipe once for lunch, students can now swipe once between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., then again between 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. This will bring the number of meal periods each week to 35, providing many more opportunities to use meal credits.”

Students will also be able to use a meal credit to purchase Howling Cow ice cream in Talley Market.

The changes are in response to customer satisfaction surveys, social media, and feedback from students. The new features eliminate many of the “use it or lose it” aspects of the old plans and lost meal credits due to the longer lunch meal period. It will also provide more opportunities for students to use the dining halls not only as a place to eat, but a place to gather more freely with more students having all day access built into their plan.

Students will be able to sign up for the new meal plans beginning March 13.

“As one of the leading college dining experiences, we are committed to meeting the needs of the students we serve,” added Lait.

Jeff Halliburton, NC State Bookstore Director

Jeff Halliburton Named Director, NC State Bookstores

Jeff Halliburton has been named director of the NC State Bookstores, Campus Enterprises announced recently. 

“We’re glad to have Jeff bring his skill set to the Campus Enterprises team and more specifically to the bookstores operation,” said Dr. Dan Adams, associate vice chancellor, Campus Enterprises. “With his expertise in retail campus bookstores combined with our state-of-the-art facilities the campus community can look forward to an even higher level of engagement.”

Halliburton brings extensive college store experience, having spent the last 13 years at the University Co-op serving the University of Texas at Austin, most recently as vice president of operations and human resources. As the new bookstores director, he is charged with the overall financial and strategic operations of the bookstores, including leadership of the flagship Wolfpack Outfitters store located in the Talley Student Union; the Pack Shop located on NC State’s Centennial Campus; Wolf Xpress, the in-house print production and course pack department; State of the Art, a unique print-on-demand clothing division, which designs artistic Wolfpack-licensed products; and the Athletics Concessions arm supporting apparel and gift retail at major sporting events.

“I am humbled by the opportunity to start a new challenge with NC State and am looking forward to working with the outstanding team and foundation of excellence that is in place,” said Halliburton. “We will develop and provide the resources required to support the learning needs of a cutting-edge University and develop the experiential retail environments that a loyal and dedicated fan base expect.”

NC State Payroll Deduction Extended to Computer/Technology Purchases

Permanent NC State employees can now purchase computers, tablets and accessories through payroll deduction. This convenient and affordable option has been made possible through a partnership between the NC State Bookstores and Treasurer’s Office.

“We have been working very hard to bring this benefit to NC State employees,” said interim bookstore director Anthony Sanders, “This new payment option will make technology more affordable and attainable for our employees, plus it keeps purchases on campus, which benefits our students through scholarships and programming.”

Purchases are made through an initial down payment followed by six or twelve monthly interest-free payments made via payroll deduction. Only permanent, full-time NC State employees with at least twelve months of service are eligible. Purchases must consist of a computer, tablet, printer or major household appliance. A 10% non-refundable down payment must be made at the time of the purchase, and the minimum payroll deduction must exceed $300 and may not exceed $3,000.

The technology department at Wolfpack Outfitters carries Apple, Lenovo and Microsoft computers as those are the brands supported and serviced by the university.

To enroll in the program:

  • Ensure you have your Wolfpack One Faculty/Staff ID Card
  • Visit the Technology Department in Wolfpack Outfitters at Talley Student Union,  Monday – Friday between 8 a.m. and  4 p.m.

NC State Dining to Provide A Free Lunch for NC State Veterans

In association with the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity, NC State Dining will be honoring the university’s 500+ veterans with a free lunch on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11. Veterans can visit a number of dining locations across campus to receive their complimentary meal.
