The Espresso Book Machine® (EBM) is a state-of-the-art book-making machine, about the size of your normal copy machine that automatically prints, binds, and trims — on demand — library-quality paperback books with glossy full-color covers indistinguishable from their factory made versions. The EBM will produce a 300-page book in about four minutes while you’re watching.

NC State Bookstores is proud to be one of the first universities to own an Espresso Book Machine. From custom-made course materials to family cookbooks, the EBM machine provides a wealth of opportunity to the entire NC State community.

Endless Possibilities

Think of the Espresso Book Machine as a fully self-contained printing press. The possibilities of what you can print are endless. The only current limitation is that internal pages can only be printed in black & white. Here are some ideas:

  • course packs and lab manuals
  • customized textbooks
  • student theses and research projects
  • family cookbooks and poetry books
  • autobiographies and memoires
  • children’s stories and genealogies
  • novels and reference books
  • compilations of essays for future students

We encourage you to explore the never ending ideas. Use your creativity and have fun! If your work can be saved as an Adobe PDF file or Microsoft Word document and can fit within a 4.5″ by 4.5″ to 8.25″ by 10.5″ page, the EBM can produce your book.

Cover Template:

For a standard 6” x 9” book:
Sheet Size: 17″ x 11″
Trim Size: 13″ x 9” (6” + 6” + 1”)
.5” margins (no text outside of margins)
.5” overlapping bleed area

All covers will be printed in full color on a sheet of 11’x17” glossy coated paper and trimmed to fit the book. Your book size will be (width of left page + width of spine + width of right page) by (height of book).

Spine Calculation:

x = a + b(y/2)
x = spine width
a = cover thickness (constant of .0327″)
b = paper thickness
y = number of pages

Example:
Your book consists of 200 pages and you want it printed so that the book will be 6″ by 9″ on Springhill cream paper.
Spine width = .0327 + (.0046 x 100) = .4927″
Book size = (6″ + .4927″ + 6″) by (9″) = 12.4927″ x 9″

Page Template:

Simply set up your word processor’s page setup settings to the size of your book. So, if you are printing a 6″ x 9″ book, set the page size to 6″ x 9″. Then add the margins, and then if desired, add header and footer information. Remember, the EBM does not reformat files.  It does, however, know where to position the page on the printing press so that each page lines up correctly.

1″ top and bottom margins (all text must be within margins)
.75″ right and left margins (all text must be within margins)

ISBNThe International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a 13-digit number that identifies books all over the world. It has been the industry standard for about 40 years. It’s what distinguishes one book from another and even changes with each new edition. People from all around the world can use the ISBN to find your book. Internet search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing key off it; all bookstores use the ISBN to organize their collections and social networking sites use the ISBN to reference books.

A bar code is a graphical representation of your books ISBN number and price. When you print a book on the EBM machine, we can attach a bar code label to allow automated scanning and point-of-sale transactions.

In order for the EBM to print your book, we will need to receive two files; one for the inside content pages and one for the complete cover. If you choose to do so, the staff can assist you with the design of your cover by using one of our templates.

When naming the files, please use the following:
YOUR LAST NAME – content.pdf
