A MORE PERFECT UNION
“The heart of the union is not locked in the steel and concrete of a building, but rather in the Union organization. The Union building is merely the instrumentality through which the union idea is accomplished.“

Gerald Erdahl, Director, NC State College Union, 1949-1961

Talley Student Union seeks to live up to this idea by providing spaces and venues for students, faculty, staff and the Wolfpack community that encourage collaboration, foster learning and provide a welcoming atmosphere. With vibrant art, natural light, comfortable furniture and amazing views, our goal is to provide a place to help build and strengthen the campus community.
Whether it’s a presentation in the 1200-seat ballroom, a student governance meeting in the Senate Chamber or a student organization meeting in a 10-seat conference room, Talley Student Union has meeting space to suit a variety of needs. These flexible spaces are equipped with furniture and technology that encourage collaboration and assist in providing a quality experience for the presenter and audience.
But there’s more! A sense of community is often built over a cup of coffee or scoop of ice cream! Many of our dining venues double as lounges to maximize flexibility and provide study space in off-peak hours. From fireplace lounges to individual and group lounges overlooking the Thomas H. Stafford, Jr Commons, and everything in between, you’ll have a space to fit almost any need.
A FOUNDATION FOR STUDENT LIFE
Talley Student Union is a foundation for student life at NC State, providing extracurricular opportunities, employment and academic resources that will propel students to success.
Students can make a difference on campus with assistance from one of the nine departments from Student Leadership & Engagement and the Office of Institutional Equity & Diversity, which will be housed in Talley and anchored by the involvement center. The James H. Woodward Student Involvement Center supports more than 600 student organizations — including Student Government and the Union Activities Board — and serves as a critical starting point for creating a meaningful co-curricular experience at NC State. Talley Student Union is also home to the student governance activities such as the Student Centers Board of Directors, which ensures that both the facilities and the social and cultural programs are operated in students’ best interest.
Students are also present in Talley Student Union as part of a vibrant student employment program preparing students with transferable skills that help them in the classroom and the workplace. These student employment opportunities include management and technical positions as well as support roles. Campus Enterprises currently employs more than 500 NC State students, and 50 of those students are employed in one of four student centers. This number will grow as Talley expands; hundreds of employees and student leaders from various departments and divisions, will volunteer in and work to manage the facility when construction is complete. Through these employment opportunities are a concrete way students can enhance their learning, improve their success, and provide ownership of the Talley Student Union.

A STRUCTURE OF SUSTAINABILITY
Core to the vision of this facility is to be sustainable and environmentally friendly. We are not only committed to sustainability but also to advancing sustainability on campus. Our society and students demand responsible stewardship of our environmental resources, and our goal in the Talley Student Union is to be a leader in sustainable initiatives.
Not only is the Talley Student Union expected to be LEED Silver Certified with a variety of building features to accomplish this goal, but the operations within the building also raise the bar. From composting to green cleaning, you can expect to find a variety of ways we are helping the university achieve the vision of sustainability.
