Welcome to a new year!

|

Welcome to the new school year! If this is your first year at NC State, WELCOME! If you are returning, welcome back. This post hopefully will serve as a primer and a refresher about the Talley Student Center Renovation and Addition Project. Below we have provided some resources and information about the project as well as what to expect this fall.

This summer over 600 auger cast piles were installed across the site, which serve as part of the foundation for the new addition. We also started building the concrete walls and elevated deck slabs (the wood formwork you see now) and we continued grading the site. You can see the summer progress below in the pictures taken from the Alexander Hall live construction camera from May 11th (day before spring commencement) to August 8th (two days before official fall move-in).

For the fall semester normal work hours for the construction crews are from 6:30am to 5:30pm. As was the case last year, as best as possible, early morning work will concentrate on the central and eastern portion of the site. Looking forward at the construction schedule for the semester, there will be a lot of work going on as Talley goes vertical with steel and concrete. The construction site will be noisy but our goal is to keep you updated on the work that is taking place and when significant disruptions need to occur, in order to give you as much notice as possible. The good news is that as the fall progresses, things will move away from Alexander towards Reynolds and the shape of the New Talley should be seen by the end of the semester with the curtain (glass) wall up in spring.

We have a noise level system that we update in order to describe what to expect. The noise levels are:

Green: During the day/night there will be very little construction-related noise

Yellow: During the day/night there will be moderate noise and/or vibration. At times there may be occasional loud noise or heavier vibration, but should be mild overall.

Red: During the day/night there will be loud and/or heavy noise and/or vibration. This noise will be constant or intermittent.

As it stands today, below is a forecast of some major activities and impacts for the coming months. These dates are subject to change based on construction progress and weather. The below information is by no means exhaustive and does not include all concrete work, it includes the major construction work that poses the potential for greatest impacts. Weekly updates are provided to campus with a more complete look at the scheduled activities with daily updates as needed.

Upcoming Tentative Schedule

  • Friday Aug. 17th  & Sat. Aug. 18th All night concrete pour for 2nd Floor Deck Slab part 1 of 2. Estimated start time of 10pm Friday to 12noon Saturday. This is the formwork you currently see. Impacts include but are not limited to back up alarms and revving engines. Noise level will increase to Red during the deck pour.
  • Friday Sept. 7th & Sept.  8th All night concrete pour for 2nd Floor Deck Slab part 2 of 2. Estimated start time of 10pm Friday to 12noon Saturday. This portion is closest to Alexander. Impacts include but are not limited to back up alarms and revving engines. Noise level will increase to Red during the deck pour.
  • Mid September Steel erection begins during daylight hours. Impacts include but not limited to banging and hammering steel.  Work hours will be 6:30am to dark with possible weekend work.  Work will progress from West (closest to Alexander Hall) to East (closest to Reynolds Coliseum) Noise level will increase to Red during steel erection
  • Mid October Elevated slab pours for the West portion of 3rd, 4th and 5th floors most likely during the day if weather cooperates. Noise level will continue to be Red due to steel erection

As always, Thursday afternoons we post our weekly construction updates online at http://go.ncsu.edu/newtalley projecting the work for the next week (Thursday to Wednesday). These also get linked via Facebook and Twitter. Facebook and Twitter are also the place to find out about daily updates that may arise.  Should you have any questions about the project or concerns feel free to email us at: talley-project@ncsu.edu

If you haven’t already check out the virtual tour and be on the look out for more info about our October Talley Table Talk.

We hope you have a great semester and stay tuned as Talley continues to transform.
