Students across campus struggle managing the various commitments they have in their college careers. This is even more of a concern for student employees. However, we have several tips that can help student employees and students alike.

1. Use a Google Calendar and a Planner

If you haven’t already started using Google Calendar you should start! Faculty, students and staff alike use it to manage their personal and professional lives. It’s the most common way to schedule meetings and a great way to organize your life! With the alert system in Google calendar you can make sure that you are on time to your classes, your career, and even social engagements.

On the other hand, there are some benefits to using a paper planner. Planners are good for creating to-do lists, arranging your schedule and prioritizing tasks. You’ve also probably heard from your professors that you remember facts better when you write them down. Well, that’s not wrong! That means that if you use a planner you’re more likely to remember your assignments, classes, and work schedule.

While there are benefits for using either Google calendar or a schedule, ideally you should use both! Uploading your assignments to both the google calendar and the planner will help you remember, prioritize and organize all of your commitments.

2. Prioritize

Even though this is a more well known strategy, it is very beneficial if used properly. As a student employee you have a unique amount of responsibilities on your shoulders. At the same time you also have limited time to achieve multiple tasks. However, if you write down all your responsibilities (maybe in a planner), you can prioritize your responsibilities. Sometimes this is a subjective thing deciding which responsibility is more important, but if you sit down ahead of time and organize your responsibilities you will be more successful and achieve all of your goals.

3. Set Alarms

This is a very simple tip. However, it can save you lots of headaches. If you set alarms (whether on Google calendar or a phone app) ahead of due dates and important responsibilities you will be more productive and have less conflicting responsibilities that affect your work.

4. Take a break!

While you may be motivated to do everything you can at college, it is inevitable that you will burn out. Work, classes, socializing and other responsibilities can take a major toll on you! Therefore in order to be able to manage your time wisely you need to take a break sometimes. Be sure not to over-commit yourselves. But if you do, be sure to take some time to do nothing. Taking breaks can make you a happier and even more productive worker and student.
