Witherspoon Student Center Unveils Fresh Spaces and New Technology

Witherspoon Auditorium features new renovations |

NC State Student Centers welcomed students back to campus with major improvements to its spaces and technology.

“You will know the moment you walk in the door that something’s different because it’s lighter and brighter,” said Tim Hogan, student centers director, “but that’s just the beginning.”

Washington Sankofa Room

The Washington-Sankofa Room (WSC126), which has traditionally hosted events led by the African American Cultural Center and Umoja Affiliates underwent a full renovation to remove the ramp and stairs to make it more spacious while providing effective ADA access. The new, modern space can accommodate up to 200 guests It features a small stage with a podium and ramp access, in addition to a new A/V system.

What truly stands out, however, is the space’s appearance.

“It’s inspired,” Hogan said. “From the ceilings and wood finishes to the iconic wrought-iron Sankofa bird that adorns the wall, the space is warm and modern with elements of African heritage throughout.”

The Sankofa is an Adinkra, which are visual symbols originating from the Gyaman people of Ghana that represent concepts, sayings and aphorisms. The story of Sankofa is of particular significance to the African American Cultural Center, representing a symbol of the wisdom of learning from the past to build for the future.

Other Adinkra – particularly Ananse, and Mate Masie – figure prominently in the building, as well, including the new elevators.

Witherspoon Auditorium also received major upgrades, with ADA access to the stage, new audio-visual equipment, and a fresh coat of paint.

“The auditorium is one of the largest classroom spaces on campus, seating up to 450 guests, and it’s available evenings and weekends for programming. Many student organizations and departments use it for cultural events, programs, and celebrations.

The first-floor restrooms were renovated, which included modifications to accommodate motorized wheelchairs, which have a larger turning radius than manually operated versions.

Room 201, a meeting/conference room that can accommodate up to 100 guests was also upgraded with new furnishings, flooring and A/V designed to accommodate in-person and hybrid meetings.

Planning to make Witherspoon a more inviting, inclusive, and functional space began in Fall 2022. Other improvements associated with this effort included a new fire alarm system and more functional entry spaces, completed in 2022-2023.

The  Washington Sankofa Room and Witherspoon Auditorium can be reserved up to a year in advance.
