The NC State Student Centers are at the heart of campus life, and these highly used facilities require regular maintenance and upkeep. From fresh new spaces in Witherspoon to expanded seating at One Earth, the Student Centers are constantly evolving to meet the needs of our campus. Red and White Week celebrations and early voting alone brought over 21,000 voters through the doors, in addition to the thousands of students who use the facilities daily.
The Student Centers team works hard to balance daily cleaning, maintenance, long-term repairs, and future-focused improvements. Talley Student Union (TSU), now ten years old, is experiencing increased wear and tear due to higher usage rates. Maintaining its status as a premier campus space requires consistent upkeep to preserve the original investment and enhance the student experience. Witherspoon Student Center (WSC), with more than 30 years of service, is showing its age and calls for even more extensive repairs and renovations.
In addition to addressing these challenges, the Student Centers team is working to expand seating and refresh interiors to meet evolving campus needs. They have carefully scheduled upcoming projects by working around academic breaks and existing event reservations to minimize disruption.
Upcoming maintenance and improvement projects include:
- WSC Air Handler #2 Replacement serving Washington-Sankofa (126) multipurpose Room completed
- WSC Air Handler #5 Replacement serving restrooms and common areas is projected to be completed by the end of February.
- TSU Common Area Carpet Replacement is projected to be completed by Spring Break.
- Ongoing Paint Refresh with continued efforts to emphasize University brand colors.
“Investing in the upkeep and modernization of our Student Centers ensures they remain welcoming, functional spaces that meet the needs of our growing campus community,” said Jeff Halliburton, senior director of auxiliary services with Campus Enterprises.
As the Student Centers continue to adapt and evolve, the goal remains the same: to be known and sought after as a prominent partner that advances the University mission, by raising the standards of the campus experience for students, staff, faculty, alumni, and guests with a reputation for the highest quality of service and facilities.
