Freelon Group Selected to Transform NC State’s Gregg Museum

|

North Carolina State University (NCSU) selected The Freelon Group to design a new and expanded home for the University’s fine art museum and learning center, the Gregg Museum of Art and Design. The $7.5 million project will relocate the Gregg Museum from its current location in the University’s Talley Student Center to a freestanding, LEED Silver-Certified facility comprised of a renovated 7,000-square-foot historic Chancellor’s house and a new 16,700-square-foot new wing. The project is scheduled for completion in October 2013.

“This is a landmark project for North Carolina State University and for the entire region,” said Philip Freelon, FAIA, founder and president of The Freelon Group. “The new Gregg Museum will provide a gathering place for the region’s art community, advance research opportunities for students, and a become one of North Carolina’s prime arts and culture destinations. We are proud to be designing this important cultural resource.”

Along with enhancing the museum’s profile and improving its exhibition areas and galleries, the Freelon team will create versatile space for arts programming, artistic research, administrative offices, meeting areas and special collections storage. Extensive site reconfiguration and improvements on the Raleigh campus are planned to complete the transformation.

The new assignment follows Freelon’s successful partnership with NCSU in phase one programming and site selection for the Museum project, and continues a longstanding collaboration with the university. Freelon previously provided planning and design for the Partners III life science building and for the renovation of Thomas Hall, both on the Raleigh campus.
