Campus organizations and Hillsborough Street partner for an eco-friendly tailgate

September 13, 2011 (Raleigh, NC) — The Hillsborough Street Commission has partnered with NC State Dining and various campus organizations to bring all the excitement of a live game experience to NC State Students with the Bearcat Beatdown event.  On September 22 from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Harris Field and Hillsborough Street will host tailgate activities and a live broadcast of the NC State vs. Cincinnati away football game.

Students have the option of attending the event at two separate locations, Harris Field and Hillsborough Street.  The Hillsborough Street portion will take place in the parking lot between Jimmy John’s and Hot Box Pizza.  Both locations will offer a live broadcast of the game and activities.

Tailgate activities will begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by kick-off at 8:00 p.m.  Prior to kick-off students can take part in Harris Field activities that include:  a live performance by the Nick Driver Band, free food and drinks, a cupcake showcase, an appearance from Mr. and Mrs. Wuf, a football toss, carnival games, Minute to Win It contests, free t-shirts, a residence hall competition benefiting Uplifting Athletes (winner scores $300 worth of Moe’s Catering), eco-friendly games, the Campus Police Mobile Unit offering free engraving to prevent bike theft, and a Student Health Scavenger Hunt (winner will receive a $100 Dick’s Sporting Goods gift card).

The Harris Field portion of the Bearcat Beatdown will be an environmentally-friendly event.  The event is Certified Wolfpack Green by the Office of Sustainability at the level of Green Events Steward.  To become certified, campus organizations must meet sustainable guidelines in the following categories when planning an event:  food, waste, purchasing, education, marketing, transportation, energy and water, service and innovation.

“We anticipate that students will be drawn to the Bearcat Beatdown tailgate activities prior to kick-off,” said Keith Smith, NC State Dining food service manager.  “Students are encouraged to bring their own seating, blankets or lawn chairs, to watch the Wolfpack take on the Bearcats on a twenty-five foot screen.  Absolutely no alcohol is permitted.”

Both outdoor events are free and open to NC State students.  A special theme meal will also be available at Fountain and Clark Dining Halls that is included for students on a meal plan; non-meal plan holders can pay $7.85 cash/credit or $7.35 AllCampus.  Take out is not available at theme meals.

Sponsors for the Bearcat Beatdown include  NC State Student Health Promotions, the Office of Sustainability, Union Activities Board, Moe’s Catering, Campus Police, Waste Reduction and Recycling, NC State Student Media, Alumni Association Student Ambassador Program, Coca-Cola and the Wolfpack Club.
