Dining halls to offer whole grain menu items in October

October 10, 2011 (Raleigh, NC) — Whole grain menu items will be featured throughout the month of October in dining hall locations. The promotion is part of the nationwide “Whole Grains Challenge” sponsored by the Whole Grains Council.

As part of the challenge, dining halls will offer a whole grain menu option everyday in October. Menu items include, pizza with a whole wheat crust, brown rice, whole wheat wraps, a pasta bar with whole wheat options, Thai barley stir-fry, tacos with a whole wheat tortilla and more.

Throughout October, NC State Dining will also seek to educate the NC State community on the importance of eating whole grains. Educational information can be found on the NC State Dining Facebook page or in weekly e-minders to students, parents, faculty and staff.

“We regularly offer whole grain products in our dining halls, but we wanted to step up and take the ‘Whole Grains Challenge’ to see how our students would respond,” said Lisa Eberhart, registered dietitian for NC State Dining. “We expect a positive response and plan on expanding our healthy, whole grain options in the future.”
