November 17, 2011 (Raleigh, NC) — NC State Bookstores, now located on the ground floor of Harrelson Hall in the Brickyard, will host Bethany Bradsher, author of The Classic: How Everett Case and His Tournament Brought Big-Time Basketball to the South on December 2 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The Classic tells the story of the rise of college basketball along Tobacco Road, but also chronicles the scandal that led to the tournament’s demise.
The Dixie Classic was an annual basketball tournament that took place in Reynolds Coliseum from 1949 to 1961. The three-day tournament took place between Christmas and New Year’s Day and pitted four teams from North Carolina – NC State, UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke University and Wake Forest against four elite teams from around the nation that were selected by Everett Case, NC State basketball coach from 1946 – 1964. During the Dixie Classic’s existence, the Wolfpack finished as the champion a record seven times.
“It was ‘the greatest basketball tournament in the United States of America. No single cage event in the nation can match this one in competitiveness, attendance, and spectacle,’” said John Russell, Seton Hall head basketball coach in a review listed on the publisher’s web site.

In addition to the book signing, attendees are encouraged to shop the annual NC State Bookstores Final Madness Sale on December 2 from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The sale discounts nearly the entire store to 40 percent off (some exclusions apply).
Parking for NC State Bookstores is available in the Dan Allen parking deck located off of Dan Allen Drive, the Coliseum Deck located off of Dunn Avenue or in metered spaces on Hillsborough Street.
