Student Employee: Itzel Rojas Galvan
Itzel jump-started her campus employment early by landing a job at Wolfpack Outfitters as soon as she set foot on campus.
“I am a cashier at Wolfpack Outfitters, the campus bookstore,” Itzel said. “My daily tasks include ringing up sales, maintaining accurate records of customer paperwork and department stock, and providing a high level of customer service that reflects the values of the university.”
She was initially drawn to Wolfpack Outfitters because she wanted a job on campus that would provide her more opportunities than off-campus employment.
“I thought that by finding a job connected to the university, I would have a better chance at connecting with my peers,” she said. “It was also helpful that the bookstore is located in Talley and at a short walking distance from my classes.”
Itzel views her role at Wolfpack Outfitters as more than just a cashier position. She works on the first floor in the textbook section and is learning transferable-skills that apply to her business studies.
“I get to learn a little bit about a variety of business processed including sales, marketing and after-purchase services,” she said. “In addition, working at the bookstore has greatly improved my interpersonal communication skills.”
She said time management can be difficult around exam time when she is balancing her studies and work, but she has learned to prepare for these situations.
“My tip for balancing school with work is to set your schedule as far in advance as you can and communicate with your coworkers and managers when you have a time conflict,” she suggested.
One of her favorite parts of the job is meeting new people who turn into quality friends. She advises incoming students to take the initiative to know people you meet on campus.
“Talk to and meet as many people as you can; there is so much value in the different perspectives that each person offers,” she stated.
After graduating, Itzel wants to work in a human resources department for a company in the Triangle Area before furthering her education.
“The reason I mentioned Raleigh and Durham specifically, is because I would like to give back to the community in which I grew up,” she said. “I want to go to graduate school and get a master’s in business administration to further give back to my community after having gained experience in my field of study.”
