Student Employee: Madalyn Christie

Madalyn Christie is a junior majoring in social work and a student manager at the Starbucks in Talley Student Union. As her manager’s right-hand man, Madalyn plays an important role in keeping things on track for a heavy flow of customers.

Madalyn started as a barista at Starbucks in fall 2022. After demonstrating a strong work ethic and leadership skills, she was promoted to manager the following year and has since continued to develop into a strong and conscientious leader. In her role, Madalyn has had to navigate new challenges and changing power dynamics with integrity and a positive attitude.

“I’ve learned how to manage other adults,” said Madalyn. “I’ve worked with kids most of the time, especially before college, where there is a different power dynamic. Having to correct other adults’ behavior can be daunting, especially if they’re older. When you’re managing people your own age and older, you need to meet people where they’re at and understand their different strengths.” 

Even as a full-time student, Madalyn enjoys the familiar routine of her job. Between school, work, and her involvement in College Mentors for Kids, Madalyn understands the value of time management and is able to apply that knowledge during busy shifts.

“At Starbucks, we’re constantly going a mile a minute,” said Madalyn. “You have to manage the process, like who is going to make which drinks and how. I help direct and assist other baristas in the front and in the back.”

As a student manager, Madalyn has also polished her communication and confrontation skills, helping her keep other baristas on task while fostering a collaborative and supportive environment for both employees and customers.

“I try to understand where people are coming from,” said Madalyn, reflecting on her leadership approach. “It’s important to get to know your team to manage them effectively.”
