Coffee Shop Student Manager – Spring 2024

Campus Enterprises Mission: Campus Enterprises is NC State University’s division of retail and hospitality organizations — NC State Dining, NC State Stores, Lonnie Poole Golf Course, NC State Student Centers (Witherspoon and Talley), and the One Card Office. Each department is dedicated to providing service excellence, value and enrichment of the student experience in support of academic success.

Purpose: Provide vital support to Campus Enterprises and NC State Dining by providing an excellent dining experience for all guests.

Location:  Port City Java (multiple locations), Starbucks (Talley Student Union), 

Compensation: Starting wage $12.75/hr (Tier 4) with opportunity for raises based on years of service within Campus Enterprises. Dining and Catering employees earn free meals and are eligible for an end-of-semester bonus.

Essential functions and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Delegate tasks and coordinate among a small team of leads and baristas to manage one or more areas of operation

  • Assist with recruiting, hiring and scheduling student teams

  • Solve problems and communicate with other staff, managers, or vendors as needed to assure excellent service and food quality and safety 

  • Supervise Coffee Shop operations: 

    • Lead Coffee Shops teams, ensuring all protocols are followed correctly and consistently, and mistakes are minimized and corrected

    • Manage coffee shop operations including registers and opening/closing procedures

    • Train student employees including Baristas and Lead Baristas

  • Work on special projects assigned by the General Manager or supervisors

  • Assist with daily operations such as serving food items, maintain temperature and sanitation

  • Contribute to maintaining a Grade A sanitation rating of 95% or better
     

Essential Qualifications:

  • Current NC State University student with a flexible schedule 

  • Willing to commit to 15-20 hours per week of scheduled work for the full semester, including exam periods but excluding holiday breaks

  • Demonstrated leadership ability from past work or extracurricular experience

  • Demonstrate excellent customer service skills 

  • Ability to work with a team to serve a diverse population 

  • Elevated oral and written communication skills 

  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation

  • Must attend mandatory student employee orientation and training sessions

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment to prep, serve and restock food and merchandise items. 

  • Ability to read and follow both written and verbal instructions and recipes to efficiently and accurately assemble menu items. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Cross-trained in all functions of a Barista through previous experience

  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development, such as participation in Customer Relations Certificate or Leadership Intensive
