Student Employee: Jaenine Galido
Jaenine Galido works for Wolfpack Outfitters in Talley Student Union while pursuing a degree in accounting. She wanted to gain work experience before graduating from college, so she applied for a position at Wolfpack Outfitters because she knew it would be a great fit for her.
“Working on campus seemed ideal because all of my classes would be close to my work,” she said. “I love Talley and I love shopping at the bookstores, so I thought to myself, ‘why not work at a place I love.’”
She balances her busy schedule by using a digital and paper planner while also planning for the unexpected. She also has learned that it is okay if everything does not go perfectly.
“I like to use my paper planner to write down any daily tasks and personal notes,” Galido explained. “I also like to use my phone to quickly read through any important emails and set reminders for more time-related tasks and events. Some days, everything goes as planned. On the other hand, there have been a lot of days where nothing goes as planned.”
Galido mentioned that her job has improved her communication skills, which will benefit her in any future professional career. She now performs tasks quicker and more efficiently.
“Through this job, I have seen how efficient communication has been,” she said. “It has been beneficial to not only me but to everyone who comes into the store. Being able to help customers with their concerns has also helped me with my interpersonal skills.”
Her biggest challenge is learning from her mistakes. It is easy for Galido to be upset when she messes up, but now she turns her mistakes into lessons.
“There have been a few times where I have made a slip-up and have been corrected by a superior, and I would sometimes get disappointed in myself for allowing it to happen in the first place,” she stated. “Once I learned to forgive myself and learn from my mistakes, I was able to be a better colleague to others and improve my handling skills.”
In addition to learning from her mistakes, Galido mentioned her confidence has improved tremendously since taking this job.
“I have been working at the store for over a year and now I have a full understanding of the responsibilities and expectations of my job,” Galido said. “With this knowledge, I try to teach the new employees these expectations and try to build their confidence whenever I can. I have learned to be more confident in myself and my decisions”
The customers and coworkers are the best part of the job for her. She loves hearing the stories customers tell and enthusiasm they have for the university. Her superiors make her feel like she is a valued employee and she works well with them.
Her advice for those interested in working for Campus Enterprises is to start as soon as possible.
“Start working with Campus Enterprises whenever you can,” Galido suggested. “You will get great professional experience in a friendly environment and make lifelong friends along the way!”
After graduating in May, Galido hopes to become a Certified Public Accountant and find a job in the Raleigh area. Galido wants to stay close to NC State to support the Pack!
