Student Employee: Michael Myers
Michael Myers, a student pursuing a chemical engineering major and business entrepreneurship minor, shared his experience working at NC State with Wolfpack Outfitters.
According to Myers, he wanted to apply for Wolfpack Outfitters to improve his workplace skills while also making money. He considered taking an off-campus job, but the benefits of working on campus outweighed commuting off campus for work. It was important to him for his employers to understand that being a student takes priority over work.
“I really liked the convenience and ease of working on campus,” Myers said. “Also, since a large portion of Campus Enterprises employees are students, I felt comfortable that my supervisors would be sympathetic to my busy academic schedule.”
Initially, Myers decided to apply for a job in his second year at NC State to give him time to transition as a college student. He realized looking back that working as a first-year student might have been manageable as well.
“I began working with Campus Enterprises the summer after my first year while I was taking summer classes,” Myers said. “I didn’t want to overload my schedule during my first year, so I started during my sophomore year, however, this kind of backfired since my sophomore year was even busier than my first year.”
Lucky for Myers, he had his job down pat so he was able to make the adjustment.
As a Sales Associate, Myers is expected to complete a variety of tasks on a daily basis. He mentioned some below:
“My task range from maintaining the displays on the sales floor, keeping all the apparel and accessories stocked, folding new merchandise arranging it in the stockroom, operating the registers, and, of course, providing great customer service to all the customers of Wolfpack Outfitters,” Myers said.
Working at Wolfpack Outfitters has been beneficial to Myers because he has gained several skills, his most mentionable being learning to manage his time.
“I am learning more about how to manage tasks and time,” Myers said. “My workplace can get pretty hectic sometimes, so it’s often difficult to balance all my duties in a day. I’m definitely getting better at that aspect of my job though, so I feel like I’m improving on that skill.
When asked how to balance school and work, Myers described some of his tips for managing both. He said that his managers have also been very accommodating when school work builds up.
“There have been some occasions where I’ve felt pretty swamped,” Myers said. “The best way I have found to manage that feeling is to make a schedule and stick to it. When all the time in my day is sectioned off for a specific purpose, I feel very organized and like all my responsibilities are being taken care of.”
Myers’ favorite part of his job is meeting other student coworkers. Wolfpack Outfitters has been an outlet that has allowed him to become friends with students he would have otherwise never met. His biggest advice to incoming students who are considering working for Campus Enterprise is to start early.
“Looking forward to the post-grad job search, companies will see that you were motivated to start work early in college and they will use that a sign of your initiative,” Myers said. “Starting early in your college career also allows a lot more time for personal growth within Campus Enterprises.”
